    praying mantis kung fu

    Hello,

My name is J.J. and I have diligantly studied and practiced your forms of mantis kung fu and I have the entire

dvd memorized. I practice the mantis dance and fighting applications at least 3 hours a day. However , I want to

take it farther and I was wondering if you could tell me exactly wich style of mantis kung fu this is "specifically" so I

can do more research on it and take the fighting applications farther. What path would you suggest I take from here?

    Re: praying mantis kung fu

    Dear JJ,

This form is from a aystem called "Mayflower" so it is mayflower mantis.  It is the type of animal form practiced in Tai-chi-Chuan.  To progress further you can study the entire Tai-chi-Chuan system, beginning with the slow forms (Yang, Chen, etc.), then other Tai-chi animal forms (tiger, snake etc.) and then basic fighting trainin such as our "Chinese Kickboxing" and "Phantom Kung" fu DVD's.  You should really also practice Push Hands which is at the heart of this type of training and there is a DVD for that as well.  Besides the DVD's it would be great if you had a Tai-chi-Chuan teacher nearby as nothing substitutes for an actual teacher.  To understand the principles behind this system I can suggest the books, Movements of Magic and Movements of Power.

There is really a lot of training opportunities these days with the DVD instruction.  When I was learning we just had paper sheets with the names of the movements or at best, line drawings.

Please continue asking questions on the forum.  I would like this forum to be a lively area of discussion.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Klein
